As the image shows, the canopy of Roger II’s tomb was made up of several panels of polygonal mosaic design. The tiles of the canopy and the support pillars look to be rendered in opus sectile, where all of the mosaic would be cut in circular, square, or triangular shapes and pieced together to create the pattern. The designs themselves are a combination of Islamic design, which consisted of a lot of sharp angles, and Byzantine design, which was characterized by circles and curves. The panels of circles on the ceiling of the canopy are reminiscent of Byzantine curvilinear art while the incorporation of eight-pointed stars into the mosaic design of the pillars is of an Islamic design. Examples of such mosaics can also be seen in the Cappella Palatina in Palermo, where Roger II also successfully melded together the different art styles of the many cultures of Sicily. It has been suggested that because the canopy and its support pillars are not made of porphyry that they might have been constructed later on during the establishment of the tombs brought in by Emperor Frederick II in 1215 CE.
Modern Province: (PA) Palermo
Modern Town: Palermo

"gallery-1-thumb":
"gallery-2-thumb":
"gallery-3-thumb":
