The latin inscription: ‘Quieti et paci Roger II strenui duci et primi regis Siciliae mortu us est panormi februario mense anno MCLIV’, roughly translates to: ‘Roger II, the energetic leader of Sicily, died in peace and quiet in the month of February in the year 1154 CE’. While it is not a very long inscription, it manages to portray the kind of ruler that Roger II was and the legacy that he left behind. The term ‘energetic leader’ describes the kind of ruler he was and how he helped to established a successful kingdom that blended together the languages, cultures, and lifestyles of Greeks, Italians, Arabs, and Normans. Furthermore, the phrase ‘peace and quiet’ reveals that he died of old age rather than by meeting a bloody end in battle.
Modern Province: (PA) Palermo
Modern Town: Palermo

"gallery-1-thumb":
"gallery-2-thumb":
"gallery-3-thumb":
