We can assume that there must be a special significance to the lions of Emperor Frederick II\u2019s sarcophagus because of the artists\u2019 choice to carve a complete animal sculpture holding the figure of another animal or human. One explanation for the lions can be traced back to their symbolism in Christianity and other older traditions. Here the lions are depicted as vicious animals that stand for death, the grave, and hell-fire, and they represent the fear of the Christian soul to be attacked and consumed. A second interpretation, which was probably the more likely choice, was to portray the lion as a symbol of courage, strength, and protection.
