He was the Holy Roman Emperor and had married the daughter of Roger II, Constance, in 1186 CE. Though most of his reign was spent in Germany, he ended his reign in Sicily when he went on a campaign to reconquer it from Tancred in the late 12th century. In reference to the sarcophagus itself, the design is similar to that of the sarcophagus of his wife Empress Constance, though the use of porphyry was much more extensive. Based on evidence from medieval correspondences, we can determine that this was one of two tombs that had been erected in Cefal\u00f9 and moved to the Cathedral of Palermo in 1145 CE.
