Before the Normans arrived in Palermo, the Arabs who had inhabited the city had used the site of Castellammare as a defensive point. Many of the fortifications built by the Normans would be rebuilt (and reconstructed) by other incoming groups. Castellammare would be repurposed by the Spanish and in the 19th century, its stones would be used to build homes in the surrounding areas.
