The fortress has been repurposed multiple times over the centuries by the various groups who have come to take possession of Palermo. Its beginnings were in the Arab times when it was a minor seaside fortification. The fortress saw additions under Norman rule. During the 19th century  Castellammare was abandoned and became a victim of looters, who took the stones to build homes nearby. After the Second World War, several buildings were illegally built in the surrounding areas. Today the site is protected more than it has been in the past.
