From the image, we can see that the stones used to make the bridge are relatively equal in size and shape, which suggests that they were hand-cut stones rather than the rougher uneven stone and rubble that was used in castle construction. These kinds of stone were ashlar blocks, which were cut in a way to create a smooth, even wall surface, which can best be seen along the arches. Because Palermo was a city and a center of commerce, the stone would not have been readily available and was probably shipped in from a nearby rock quarry. Planning the site for the bridge would probably have taken several months in order to find an ideal area where the current was slow and the land was relatively even. Like with castles, the stones probably would have been held together with a combination of metal, mortar, and wood to keep the gaps tight. There are still many gaps in our knowledge of medieval Sicilian bridges and further study on their construction is required.<br \/>\nModern Province: (PA) Palermo<br \/>\nModern Town: Palermo<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>Bridge of the Admiral: Ponte dell&#8217;Ammiraglio and Bridge Construction<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":400,"height":300,"file":"2013\/03\/P7310071.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"P7310071-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"P7310071-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"P7310071-332x205.jpg","width":332,"height":205,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071-332x205.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"P7310071-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"P7310071-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"P7310071.jpg","width":400,"height":300,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":0,"credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":0,"copyright":"","focal_length":0,"iso":0,"shutter_speed":0,"title":""}},"post":430,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/P7310071.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/850"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=850"}]}}
