By the height of the tallest point of the bridge relative to other points in the picture and the degree to which the bridge slopes, we can conclude that the water that ran underneath the bridge was probably rather shallow. Each of the main arches shows the impression of lighter stone with a layer of darker stone beneath it, which suggests that the arches might have suffered wear and required additional support through an added layer underneath. As a memorial to the accomplishments of George of Antioch, the most logical connection lies in his position as the admiral of Roger II\u2019s navy and his successful naval career. George and Roger II both understood that the key to expanding the power of Sicily and defending the kingdom from outside attack lay in maintaining control of the Mediterranean.
