Between each of the main arches were smaller arches which were probably added to allow water to flow more freely, especially during heavy rainfall when a backup of water could cause flooding in the surrounding area. As a symbol the bridge might seem representative of George solely as an admiral, but he is also remembered for being an advisor and general who could bridge the differences between cultures and overcome difficult situations. George led a successful embassy to Egypt in the early 12th century when Roger II was still young, and this success cemented him in Roger’s favor. He succeeded Christodoulous as amiratus ca. 1124 CE and served as the head advisor to King Roger II starting ca. 1127 CE, which was a position he would hold throughout most of the king’s reign. Other successes of George as an advisor included developing trade in the African Empire ca. 1142 CE, serving as a financial advisor to the king, and his link to the development of offices like the diwan under the jurisdiction of Roger II, which was concerned with fiscal and land administration.
Modern Province: (PA) Palermo
Modern Town: Palermo

"gallery-2-thumb":
"gallery-3-thumb":
