The main arch of the bridge, which is depicted, is slightly pointed at its apex and was constructed using closely set stone. The bridge was a symbol of the power that George of Antioch had controlled and remains as a reminder of his accomplishments. He came over to Sicily as a young man from the Byzantine Empire sometime between 1108-1109CE and offered his services to the young Roger II. George was an intelligent young man with a head for finances that he learned from his father. He was fluent in Greek and Arabic and had served with his father for a time in Syria as a Byzantine financial advisor prior to his journey to Sicily.
