It once spanned the River Oreto that ran through Palermo, though the river no longer runs beneath the bridge because it has been diverted. The diversion seems to have been due to climate change. The Bridge of the Admiral was one of three memorials left by George of Antioch in remembrance of his deeds. The other two were the church of the Martorana and the African Empire (which no longer exists).
