The angle of the image shows that the thickness of the walls could be several feet in length. This is understandable as the principle purpose of the construction of many Norman castles was to create a point of defense. C\u00e0ccamo was built on a mountain that was highly defensible and prevented miners from trying to dig tunnels under the walls to breach the defenses. The walls would have been thick to support the arch of the gate and as an extra measure of defense. On either side of the gate were rectangular towers with multiple levels that would allow archers to defend the gate with relative safety. This image also shows several rectangular loopholes, or arrow slits, in the merlons of the battlement.
