These would be used when the main walls were built out of rubble or uneven stone, and mortar was used to hold the stones together. As the walls grew taller, the square holes would be left so that beams could be inserted to support the scaffolding. Other materials used to build up a wall were metal or wood which would help to hold everything together. These holes are similar to what would be found among castles in Norman England. They help us to understand the methods of construction that the Normans would have used in the building of new castles. Along the old archway, we can see that the stone used and the way it was put together was much neater than the walls themselves.
