The thickness of this archway connecting two separate castle buildings might have been a wall-walk which provided easier passage from one side to the other. It is also interesting to note that the walkways themselves were paved with stone as well. Since the use of stone was expensive and time consuming, its use shows that the person who ordered its construction, Matthew Bonnellus, was a man of great wealth. Much of the stone that was used to construct these castles was either locally-cut or large crudely-cut stone that was stacked irregularly. Stone was an expensive building material, and the cost for moving it could have been as much as the cost of the stone itself, even with the added benefit of the mountain to provide a large amount of material.
