At the end of the path is the archways and vault with Islamic crenellations and pointed archway, and the Romanesque semicircular archway. The pathway appears older than the structure at the end of it, and made of a different stone. Scholars believe indigenous Sicilian people carved out some of the rock before the Normans began their conquest of the island.
