The cathedral itself was erected by Walter of the Mill, the archbishop of Palermo, during the reign of William II. St. Rosalia holds a place of honor in the chapel and in the province of Palermo for being the area’s patron saint. We know that she lived in Palermo during the 12th century and that she was a devoutly religious woman. Her remains were discovered in a cave on Mount Pellegrino in the 16th century and she is honored as a patron saint of healing and possibly that of evolutionary studies. Information on her life and why it was so remarkable continues to remain scarce. This image provides a clear look at the chancel and the placement of St. Rosalia’s coffin, which sits under the dome of the chapel. Ornate wainscoting, or wall decoration, lines the walls of the chapel and along the apse. There are also reliefs carved into the walls to the left and right of the coffin that probably depict religious scenes or scenes significant to the life of St. Rosalia.
Modern Province: (PA) Palermo
Modern Town: Palermo

"gallery-1-thumb":
"gallery-2-thumb":
"gallery-3-thumb":
