When viewing structures dating back to early twelve century, it is remarkable how a system was created for a basic necessity as a toilet. They were arranged as a format similar to stalls and face towards the back side of the Norman castle. As the Castle di Venere or Norman castle was constructed as a fortification to withhold enemy force, it is not surprising to see a construction of toilets near the top tier of the castle. This further re-instated the grounds, to which forces would need to remain mobile at all times. As Norman culture grew prevalent from 800 CE through 1200 CE, this castle became a beacon of accomplishment. “The Normans had an impact on this society altogether disproportionate to their number. Theirs was not to be a settlement en masse like that of the Arabs, but their influence came from a quite unusual adaptability and political skill” (Smith p. 16). This merging of tribal traditions between Sicilians and Normans allowed for a co-existed space and political influence
\nModern Province: (TP) Trapani
\nModern Town: Erice<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"
“Public” Restrooms<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/EriceToilets.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"EriceToilets-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"EriceToilets-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"EriceToilets-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"EriceToilets-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"EriceToilets-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"EriceToilets-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"EriceToilets.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":4,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092649755,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.004","title":""}},"post":102,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/EriceToilets.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/611"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=611"}]}}
