Perhaps what is so remarkable regarding the Norman Castle is that it was built upon the ruins of the Temple of Venus Erycina.  &#8220;According to one legend the temple was founded by Aeneas, another claims that is was beautified by Daedalus, while another (or an amalgam of others) claims that both temple and town were founded by Eryx, the son of Aphrodite, a local king who gave hospitality to Herakles when he visited Sicily: (Guido p.74).  The Norman Castle now rests upon where the Temple or shrine to Venus once resided.  As a side note, one may also hear the term Aphrodite, which is the Greek terminology to what the Romans called Venus.  Historians and excavators have begun the lengthy process of discovering the remains of what once was the main platform to the original temple to Venus.  Venus was especially a role model to the Romans since she stood for love and conviction.  When visiting the castle, there is a great deal of mythological and ancient tradition that surrounds the property<br \/>\nModern Province: (TP) Trapani<br \/>\nModern Town: Erice<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>Approaching the Norman Castle<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/Erice13.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"Erice13-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"Erice13-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"Erice13-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"Erice13-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"Erice13-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"Erice13-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"Erice13.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":4,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092649443,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.00125","title":"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"}},"post":102,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice13.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/604"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=604"}]}}
