Resting on a steep mountain well over 2,000 feet high, the castle solidified itself as a compound against enemy forces.  The structure and town of ancient Erice is medieval in character.  The castle itself rests on top of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to a goddess.  As the mountain is raised high above sea level, the city beneath is now modern day Trapani.  The legend of Erice is very interesting.  &#8220;According to legend, Erice, son of Venus and Neptune, founded a small town on top of a mountain (750 metres above sea level) more than three thousand years ago&#8221;  (<https:\/\/esg2013.presid.infn.it\/info.php?flag_info=concerto>).  Virgil was so moved by the town of Erice that he would account of the arrival of the Trojan royal family<br \/>\nModern Province: (TP) Trapani<br \/>\nModern Town: Erice<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>Through the Eyes of the Warrior<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/Erice12.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"Erice12-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"Erice12-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"Erice12-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"Erice12-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"Erice12-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"Erice12-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"Erice12.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":4,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092649858,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.001","title":""}},"post":102,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Erice12.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/603"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=603"}]}}
