According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the term apse means, a projecting part of a building (as a church) that is usually semicircular in plan and vaulted.  It usually encompasses a dome over the alter to showcase the main work displayed in the church.  The eye is fixated by the Christ Pantocrator adorned by his angels and the heavenly court.  The image of Christ Pantokrator fills the cathedral with an all-embracing gesture. &#8220;Below, the Virgin sits enthroned with the Christ Child on her knees, flanked by archangels and Apostles, with a row of saints below. Both rows continue from the apse on to the presbytery walls: but whereas the Apostles turn towards the centre, the saints below are shown in strict frontality&#8221; (oxfordartonline.com).  The mosaics depicted throughout the Cathedral were probably done by a series of expert painters from Greece, whom were commissioned by the King to complete the monumental task.  There has been little to no mention of the actual painters and their respective past.<br \/>\nModern Province: (PA) Palermo<br \/>\nModern Town: Greater Palermo<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>The Main Cathedral<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":2.8,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092718573,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"183","shutter_speed":"0.5","title":"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"}},"post":118,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeInteriorLookingTowardApse.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/596"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=596"}]}}
