A cloister is best representative and attributed to the medieval period.  The open floor plan is a key feature to monasteries and allowed clergy members to progress from the monastery to the church through an outside walkway, which borders the center of the Monreale Cathedral.  The bell tower featured in this picture is one of two that exist at the Cathedral.  The cloister pattern shown here encompasses both Arab and Norman influence and merges them together eloquently.<br \/>\nModern Province: (PA) Palermo<br \/>\nModern Town: Greater Palermo<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"<p>Enclosure with Bell Tower<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"MonrealeCloister4.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":4,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092723881,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.0015625","title":"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"}},"post":118,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister4.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/592"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=592"}]}}
