There are “228 small double columns with varied decoration culminating in the highly elaborate capitals supporting the arches of Arab inspiration” (Sicily p. 77). The cloister not only displays a great deal of skilled craftsmanship, but the pointed arches display a geometric methodology with scenes depicted from the bible on the center marble stone columns. King William II of Sicily would also be known as William the Good, because of his fair treatment upon the towns and provinces, unlike his father, William I. Additionally, William II was greatly influenced by Arab poets during his upbringing and reign. “William’s greatest act of patronage was to build the immense Benedictine abbey of Monreale, in which Eastern and Western style met” (Privitera p. 64). Pictured beyond the Cloister is the nave leading to the main Cathedral. Additionally, the Cappella di San Placido rests above the Cloisters. This small chapel of San Placido was the first to be commissioned in 1590 as a museum. Moreover, the original Arab- Norman garden structure still remains and an Arab inspired fountain is constructed within the far compounds of the garden (not pictured).
\nModern Province: (PA) Palermo
\nModern Town: Greater Palermo<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"
Patterns of Design<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"MonrealeCloister2.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":4,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092724146,"copyright":"","focal_length":"5.7","iso":"80","shutter_speed":"0.0025","title":"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"}},"post":118,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeCloister2.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/591"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=591"}]}}
