They are often casted as the great warriors, which fought against the oppressive majority whom denounced Christianity. These military Saints fought for the expansion of Christianity and succeeded through great resistance. This “work also opens a new perspective on the military history of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine ideology of war is seen consistently to follow that of the Israelites; protected and favoured by divine intervention, there was no need to discuss the morality of a ‘just war’; and when considering Byzantine methods of warfare, due attention should be given to the important role they attributed to celestial help in their campaigns” (Walter). The major warrior Saints identified in this mosaic is St. George, St. Mercurius, St. Procopius, and St. Theodore Tiron. The other Saints pictured in this mosaic, could not be identified due to the scale and limits of the actual photo. However, minor Military Saints also played a key role in the spread of Christianity and their leadership should not be discounted. (St. Artemius, St. Arethas, St Martin of Tours, St. Eustathius, just to name a few.)
\nModern Province: (PA) Palermo
\nModern Town: Greater Palermo<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"
Military Saints<\/p>\n"},"alt_text":"","media_type":"image","mime_type":"image\/jpeg","media_details":{"width":500,"height":375,"file":"2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic.jpg","sizes":{"thumbnail":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-150x150.jpg","width":150,"height":150,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-150x150.jpg"},"medium":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-300x225.jpg","width":300,"height":225,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-300x225.jpg"},"teaser-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-332x249.jpg","width":332,"height":249,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-332x249.jpg"},"gallery-1-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-432x375.jpg","width":432,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-432x375.jpg"},"gallery-2-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-268x268.jpg","width":268,"height":268,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-268x268.jpg"},"gallery-3-thumb":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-268x164.jpg","width":268,"height":164,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic-268x164.jpg"},"full":{"file":"MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic.jpg","width":500,"height":375,"mime_type":"image\/jpeg","source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic.jpg"}},"image_meta":{"aperture":3.5,"credit":"","camera":"C5060WZ","caption":"","created_timestamp":1092718859,"copyright":"","focal_length":"12.8","iso":"183","shutter_speed":"1.3","title":"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA"}},"post":118,"source_url":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/MonrealeMilitarySaintsMosaic.jpg","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/585"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/attachment"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.envisioningnormansicily.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=585"}]}}
