Unlike the new arch, the original was slightly pointed at the top. One possible explanation for this type of arch could be attributed to the traditional fighting style of the Norman knights. Besides their abilities on foot, they were also known as excellent horsemen, and the taller archway would have allowed both knights and nobles to pass into the castle without having to leave their steeds. Another feature of the castle can be seen in the roughly hewn stone just to the left of the doorway. The rough cuts of this stone versus the neatly placed bricks that surround it suggest that the foundations of the castle were carved into terraces on the mountain.
