They were also apt to modifying or adding on to the castles or fortresses of the towns and cities that they conquered, although this was not the case in Càccamo. This castle was probably a modification of a traditional Norman castle which consisted of a donjon, or a great tower, surrounded by fortified curtain walls and mural towers. The castle at Càccamo would not have needed very much in the way of a curtain wall due to its position perched on top of Mount Calogero. The walls of the castle, as can be seen, were built tall to prevent the enemy from scaling the walls. This image also shows a good perspective of a battlement, with its crenels and merlons, which would have served as a vantage point for archers to shoot down at enemy soldiers or to hurl heavy objects and as a defensive position in case of return fire. It is easy to see which sections of the castle have been restored and which sections of the castle are of original Norman build by the shape of the stones and the smooth appearance of some of the walls.
Modern Province: (PA) Palermo
Modern Town: Càccamo

"gallery-1-thumb":
"gallery-2-thumb":
"gallery-3-thumb":
